According to a congressional investigation released Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, federal health inspectors wanted to shut down the New England Compounding Center, until it cleaned up its operations in 2002. Nearly 440 people have been sickened by contaminated steroid shots distributed by New England Compounding Center, and more than 32 deaths have been reported since the outbreak began in September, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. News Summary: Drugmakers, Interpol go after fakes
GETTING TOUGH: Interpol's newly created Pharmaceutical Crime Program aims to help health and law enforcement agencies worldwide stem the supply of bogus brand-name and generic medicines and break up the organized crime rings distributing them.
SHOW ME THE MONEY: More than two dozen pharmaceuticals companies have pledged €4.5 million ($5.9 million) over three years to help Interpol train local police on investigative procedures, evidence handling and how to work with partners outside their countries.
HIGH COST: The drug rings cost legitimate drugmakers billions in lost sales while patients who take counterfeit drugs often are poisoned or get sicker because they're not receiving what the doctor prescribed.
