NY senator eyes new GPS rules for truckers

LAKEVIEW, N.Y. (AP) — New York Sen. Charles Schumer said new rules are planned to prevent trucks and buses from striking low bridge underpasses.
Schumer was on Long Island on Monday to announce changes from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
The senator noted that GPS devices often lead trucks onto roads that forbid commercial vehicles. Parkways on Long Island and the northern suburbs are among those that ban commercial traffic.
Schumer said much of the problem is attributed to misused GPS systems.
Federal transportation officials will begin distributing official recommendations about the proper use of GPS devices in commercial motor vehicles, Schumer said.
Tips will include instructions to input the size, axle weight and other important details of the commercial truck into the GPS.
The FMCSA also will provide additional training.
