No parole appeal for Hoddle St killer

Victorian mass murderer Julian Knight has been denied the chance to appeal a parole board decision to refuse him a tentative release date because a judge says it is doomed to fail.

The Hoddle Street killer wrote to the Adult Parole Board last year requesting a tentative date for his release ahead of his earliest release date of May 2014, but was refused.

Knight has been declared a vexatious litigant and must seek court permission before commencing a legal action.

Victorian Supreme Court Justice Cameron Macaulay said he was not convinced Knight's proposed appeal would not be a waste of time.

"In my view any such proceeding is foredoomed to fail," he said.

"I am not satisfied that it would not be an abuse of process.

"Leave must therefore be refused."

Knight is serving a minimum 27 years for killing seven people and injuring 19 others at Hoddle Street in inner Melbourne in August 1987.
