A man has been stabbed twice and broke both ankles during a dispute in a unit block in Sydney's southeast.

Police want to question a 19-year-old man after he allegedly became involved in an altercation with a 41-year-old in the stairwell of a Kingsford unit on Monday.

During the fight the older man threw a bottle at the 19-year-old before being stabbed in the stomach and back, police say.

He then jumped out of a third floor window.

The injured man was taken to hospital and treated for injuries.

At around 10pm (AEDT) police began to chase an Audi station wagon on Anzac Parade which they believed was being driven by the 19-year-old but they were forced to give up due to safety concerns.

He is described as having a muscular build and a tattoo on left side of neck.

Investigators have urged members of the public not to approach the man but appealed for anyone with information about either incident or his location to contact police immediately.
