A man is recovering in hospital after falling from a pedestrian bridge onto a ledge above the railway yards in Melbourne's CBD.

The 25-year-old fell two metres from Batman Avenue bridge just before 10:00pm (AEDT).

The ledge saved him from falling onto live power lines and the railway tracks.

It took almost an hour for rescuers to shut down the power, stop the trains and abseil down to retrieve him.
