A man has been charged after NT Police stumbled on an alleged weapons arsenal of 29 firearms stashed in a suburban home.

Police say they found the cache, which included an Uzi machine gun, a military-style sniper rifle, a sawn-off shotgun, and an AK-47 assault rifle, after searching the 29-year-old man's home as part of an investigation into a theft of $23,000 from a Palmerston business.

Commander Richard Bryson said other items seized included ammunition, cross bows, knives, and throwing stars.

"Many of the firearms were unsecured or unregistered and police are conducting further inquiries in relation to the firearms and the restricted, controlled and banned weapons," he said.

The man has been charged with multiple offences and has been remanded in custody.

"Suburban homes are no place for assault rifles," Commander Bryson said.
