GOMA, Congo (AP) — In a story March 4 about a plane crash in Congo's eastern city of Goma, The Associated Press reported erroneously that 36 passengers were killed in the crash, citing the city's mayor. The plane crash killed 7 people. The mayor corrected the death toll on March 5, and it was confirmed by an airline and rescue official.

GOMA, Congo (AP) — Congolese officials say a plane crash in the eastern city of Goma has killed seven people and injured three.

Goma mayor Naasson Kubuya said three passengers survived the crash of the CAA Fokker airplane, which had 10 people on board. The mayor had earlier said 40 people were on board and only four people survived based on initial police estimations.

CAA and rescue team officials have since confirmed that 10 people were on board. An official with the company confirmed Kubuya's figures and said five crew were among the dead, one crew member was missing and one of four passengers was killed. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to speak to the press.

The aircraft crashed in the center of Goma, but witnesses say it did not hit any people on the ground.
