Danielle Scott has claimed Australia's first medal from the world freestyle skiing championships, edging out her more fancied compatriots to claim third in the aerials event in Norway.

In a consistent team performance the Australians managed to get all five of their skiers through to the finals but it was Scott that finished best of the women, the 23-year-old beating defending Olympic champion Lydia Lassila (5th), Samantha Wells (6th) and Laura Peel (8th) to the podium.

China's Mengtao Xu, the standout jumper this season, took out the women's title and Russia's Veronika Korsunova was second.

David Morris, who recorded his debut World Cup win in the Ukraine two weeks ago, was fifth in the men's event after qualifying for the final in second place.

The Chinese also dominated the men's event with winner Guangpu Qi and Zongyang Jia book-ending Canada's Travis Gerrits in third.

The bronze for Scott marked the seventh aerial skiing medal Australia has won at a world championship level.

Scott gave plenty of credit to 1999 world champion Jacqui Cooper, who drove the development of the sport in Australia over two decades.

"Jacqui has been alongside of me the whole time," Scott said.

"The main advice she gave me was before Sochi (last month's Olympic test event) and she gave me a few pointers that really helped me."
