Miner defends water release breach

Mining giant Rio Tinto says equipment failure resulted in water release breaches at its Hail Creek mine in Queensland's Bowen Basin.

The Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection has fined the company more than $2,000 for the discharge after recent wet weather.

In a statement, Rio Tinto says it has a very good compliance history and the water did not leave the mining lease boundary.

Steps have also been taken to replace the faulty equipment and prevent it from happening again.
