[NAT-BREAK]

IN HENRYVILLE, INDIANA, THE REMNANTS OF VIOLENT WEATHER SIT EXPOSED.

IT'S THE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF A DEADLY OUTBREAK OF 75 TORNADOES ACROSS 8 STATES THAT KILLED 42 PEOPLE

AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY IT'S NATIONAL WEATHER PREPAREDNESS WEEK AND THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IS TRYING TO SAVE LIVES WITH NEW TECHNOLOGY AND WARNINGS

[SOT: PAUL SCHLATTER / NOAA RADAR EXPERT]

"WELL, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE RISKS, YOU KNOW WHAT TYPES OF WEATHER CAN IMPACT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY."

AND PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO NEW RADARS ON SMART PHONE APPS AND FORECASTERS USING THE NEW DUAL POLARIZATION RADAR SYSTEM THAT IS ABLE TO SHOW STRENGTH IN DEBRIS

[SOT: PAUL SCHLATTER / NOAA RADAR EXPERT]

"WITH DUAL POLARIZATION TECHNOLOGY WE CAN ACTUALLY DETECT WHAT IS OUT THERE. WHETHER IT'S RAIN, SNOW, HAIL."

[SOT: STEPHANIE DECKER / TORNADO SURVIVOR)

"I COVERED THE CHILDREN UP AND SAW THE FOUNDATION PULL AWAY FROM THE HOUSE."

STEPHANIE DECKER HAD JUST PICKED HER 2 CHILDREN UP FROM SCHOOL. HER HUSBAND, A HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER WAS IN A SEVERE WEATHER LOCKDOWN JUST MILES AWAY. HE WAS PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE RADAR AND TEXTED HER TO GET INTO THE BASEMENT, GRAB A BLANKET AND TAKE COVER.

[SOT: STEPHANIE DECKER / TORNADO SURVIVOR)

"AND I WRAPPED THEM TIGHT AND COMPLETELY LAID ON TOP OF THEM."

[NAT-BREAK: FILE VIDEO OF TORNADO]

WITH 175MPH WINDS, THE F4 TWISTER UNLEASHED HELL ON EARTH.

[SOT: STEPHANIE DECKER / TORNADO SURVIVOR)

"SO IT LIFTED THE HOUSE UP AND THEN SLAMMED THE HOUSE BACK DOWN ON US AND THEN WENT INTO OUR HOME."

DECKER WAS BADLY INJURED AND WAS LAYING IN 10 FEET OF DEBRIS.

[SOT: STEPHANIE DECKER / TORNADO SURVIVOR)

"WE GOT HIT BY A SECOND TORNADO SO WE GOT HIT WITH TWO THAT DAY. AN F2 CAME IN AFTER THAT WITH US EXPOSED OUTSIDE."

WITH HER ACTIONS, DECKER SAVED THE LIVES OF HER SON AND DAUGHTER, NOT A SCRATCH TO EITHER OF THEM. BUT THE RAGING TORNADO PUNCTURED HER LUNG , BROKE ALMOST ALL HER RIBS AND EVEN WORSE

[SOT: STEPHANIE DECKER / TORNADO SURVIVOR)

"I HAD SEVERED BOTH LEGS, DIDN'T KNOW IT BUT REALLY MY PANTS WERE THE ONLY THING HOLDING MY LEGS ON."

ONE YEAR LATER, THIS MOTHER, WIFE AND INSPIRATION TO MANY IS A DOUBLE AMPUTEE WHO CREDITS HER LIFE TO COMMUNITY ACTION AND RESPONSE THAT DAY

[SOT: STEPHANIE DECKER / TORNADO SURVIVOR)

"AND NOW WE KNOW THAT WE ARE EVEN MORE PREPARED. WE ARE PREPARED IF WE GET STUCK OR WE ARE TRAPPED OR THE WHAT IFS. THE THINGS THAT YOU DON'T REALLY THINK, THIS WON'T HAPPEN TO ME. WELL, I DIDN'T REALLY THINK THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN TO ME EITHER."

[NAT-BREAK: FILE VIDEO]

POWERFUL AND DAMAGING

SEVERE WEATHER , LIKE TORNADOES, HURRICANES, LIGHTENING, FLOODS AND WINTER STORMS ARE COMMON, AND SEEM TO BE GETTING MORE SO
