STORYLINE:

GABBY GIFFORDS MADE HER FIRST PUBLIC APPEARANCE AT THE SITE WHERE A MASS SHOOTING BY A YOUNG MENTALLY DISTURBED GUNMAN......CLAIMED SIX LIVES -- AND ALMOST TOOK THE LIFE OF THE FORMER CONGRESSWOMAN..

SHE USED THE APPEARANCE TO PUSH FOR STRONGER GUN CONTROL.

SOUNDBITE: Gabrielle Giffords - Former Congresswoman

"be bold....be courageous....please support background checks.

THE SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE IS SCHEDULED TO TAKE UP TOUGHER FIREARMS REGULATIONS ON THURSDAY.

GIFFORD'S -- AND HER HUSBAND - MARK KELLY - SUPPORT EXTENDING BACKGROUND CHECKS TO GUN SHOWS AND INTERNET PURCHASES .

KELLY SAID HE AND HIS WIFE ARE BOTH GUNOWNERS....AND STRONG SUPPORTERS OF THE SECOND AMENDMENT.

SOUNDBITE: Mark Kelly - Gabrielle Giffords' Husband

But this discussion is really not about the second amendment....it's about public safety....and keeping guns out of the hands of the dangerously mentally ill."

THE SHOOTING HAPPENED DURING AN OUTDOOR "MEET AND GREET" EVENT -- ORGANIZED BY GIFFORDS.

SHE IS STILL RECOVERING AND RESIGNED FROM CONGRESS LAST YEAR.

LAST NOVEMBER -- THE SHOOTER -- 24 YEAR OLD JARED LOUGHNER WAS SENTENCED TO SEVEN CONSECUTIVE LIFE SENTENCES -- PLUS 140 YEARS IN PRISON.

KELLY SAID IT WASN'T DIFFICULT TO RETURN TO THE PLACE WHERE HIS WIFE NEARLY DIED.

HE SAID, "IT'S PLACES LIKE THIS THAT CONGRESS NEEDS TO MAKE SAFER."
