More than 600 public sector workers have held a mass meeting in Perth in an effort to call for an end to job cuts.

Community and Public Sector Union secretary Toni Walkington says it is clear that the best way to get a response from the Government is to take industrial action.

Ms Walkington cited the recent strike threat by nurses as an example.

She says her members want an end to job cuts, the slashing of services and the wastage of tax payers' money through the privatisation of essential services.

She says there are not enough staff in some fields, particularly child welfare, and the community is being let down.

"We have child protection officers who have a load of cases and children that they cannot attend to," Ms Walkington said.

"We've got child protection officers taking children home themselves.

"We've got people who are just simply not able to keep going in the current situation."

Ms Walkington said car licensing, dental services, and the Conservation Department have also been hit hard.
