Three doctors suspended at Northam Hospital

Three doctors have been suspended following a review of practices at Northam Hospital's emergency department.

The review was initiated by the Health Minister Kim Hames following the deaths of four patients being treated at the hospital in just over two years.

The review's author, Gary Geelhoed, made a number of recommendations including establishing a staff sharing relationship between Northam Hospital and a metropolitan emergency department.

He also recommended the appointment of an emergency medical specialist as well as more training for staff.

The suspended practitioners will be referred to the Medical Board of Australia.

The report did not make any recommendations in relation to nursing practices because it found significant changes had occurred in that area following a Coroner's report released last year.
