Minister rejects calls to fix Gold Coast beaches

Queensland Tourism Minister Jann Stuckey says the State Government is not in a position to help fund repairs to Gold Coast beaches.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate says the State Government should pay half the estimated cost of $30 million.

Ms Stuckey, who is also the Member for Currumbin, says infrastructure throughout the state needs attention.

"I think more could have been done by council but also residents - if people build close to the beach, whose responsibility is it?" she said.

"This very sad situation really does present an opportunity for us to be able to put in place, as best we can, long-term management solutions.

"It is highly unlikely for us to chip in for something that is very much a council responsibility.

"You really have to say more could have been done over the years."
