In this Feb. 20, 2013 photo, Margaret Fiester, operations manager at the Society for Human Resource Management, poses for a photograph in Alexandria, Va. Fiester is no shrinking violet, but she says working for her former boss, who subjected her to abusive tirades, was a nightmare. She doesn't have to worry about the tirades anymore, but she hears lots of similar stories in her current job, where she often fields questions about the growing issue of workplace bullying. News Summary: Pushback against workplace bullying
BULLIES: Bullying has moved from the playground to the work space. It can be a supervisor's verbal abuse and threats or a co-worker's cruel comments or relentless teasing. It could become the next major battleground in employment law.
GROWING AWARENESS: Many companies recognize workplace bullying can sap morale, lead to increased employee turnover and affect the bottom line.
CRACKING DOWN: A growing number of states are considering legislation that would let workers sue for harassment that causes physical or emotional harm. Advocacy groups want states to give legal rights to bullied workers. Business groups say that would open the floodgates to frivolous lawsuits.
