A man has been banned from using Facebook as part of his penalty for attempting to groom young girls for sex on the social networking site.

The County Court, sitting in Bendigo in central Victoria, heard Garry Norman Mackay used sexually explicit language while chatting on Facebook with two covert police officers, posing as 13 and 14-year-old girls.

Mackay, who has spina bifida and is confined to a wheelchair, pleaded guilty to charges of using a carriage service to groom a person under the age of 16 for sexual activity.

He was sentenced to a two-year community corrections order, including 50 hours of community service, and banned from Facebook.
