A police officer charged with speeding while escorting singer Jimmy Barnes to a concert in Western Australia's south-west has been fined $700.

Sergeant Craig Anderson was caught driving at 114 kilometres per hour in an 80kph zone in November 2011.

The court heard he had been told to escort the band Cold Chisel to the concert in Margaret River because a plane delay meant they were running late.

Sergeant Anderson said he was given orders to carry out the escort unimpeded and sped up to overtake slow vehicles.

The prosecution argued he should not have been speeding because it was not an emergency.

The officer was also ordered to pay more than $1,600 in court costs.
