Temporary extension seen for Mass. rail operator

BOSTON (AP) — The company that operates Massachusetts' commuter rail system could be in line for a temporary contract extension while state transportation officials weigh bids for a new long-term contract.
A vote on the extension is on the agenda for the state Board of Transportation at its monthly meeting on Wednesday.
The commuter rail system, comprised of 394 miles of track, has been operated since 2003 by Massachusetts Bay Commuter Rail. The company's contract with the MBTA expires on June 30, but officials have indicated they will not be able to complete the procurement process for a new contract by that time.
MBCR is one of two bidders for what's expected to be a more than $1 billion contract. The other bidder is Keolis America Inc., a subsidiary of a French company.
