Australia has welcomed Israel's investigation into the death of Palestinian prisoner Arafat Jaradat, which has triggered fresh tensions in the Middle East.

Militants have vowed revenge over the death of Jaradat, whom Palestinians claim died under Israeli torture.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr says Australian officials in Tel Aviv have contacted Israel's foreign ministry to raise the case.

"Israeli authorities are aware of the significant international interest in this issue," Senator Carr said in a statement on Thursday.

"I welcome Israel's confirmation that an investigation is underway. It is important the circumstances of this death be thoroughly examined."

Thousands thronged the West Bank village of Sair for the 30-year-old father of two's funeral this week.

Jaradat was a member of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade.

Israel has called for calm and the United States also urged restraint.
