Big new fines for drug and drink drivers

The Victorian Government is planning new laws aimed at people who drive under the influence of both alcohol and drugs.

Those caught will face a minimum fine of more than $2,800.

The laws will include new powers for police, allowing them to automatically impound the cars of first time offenders who record a blood alcohol reading of 0.1 or more.

Police Minister Peter Ryan says he believes Victoria is one of the only jurisdictions in the world to create a specific penalty for drivers with both alcohol and drugs in their system.
