AUTHORITIES IN NEW ZEALAND SAY A LARGE SHARK KILLED A MAN SWIMMING AT A POPULAR BEACH NEAR AUCKLAND.
LIKE WATCHING A SCENE UNFOLD FROM A MOVIE, THIS WITNESS WAS HORRIFIED BY WHAT HE SAW.
SOUNDBITE: (English) Pio Mose, Shark attack witness:
"He just shouted out 'shark' and next minute we saw him rolling around. There was blood everywhere on the water.
HE SAYS the swimmer was initially attacked by a single shark but minutes later he saw three sharks near the victim, WHO WAS SWIMMING ABOUT 650 FEET OFFSHORE. EVEN LIFEGUARDS ON DUTY WERE FORCED HOLD BACK UNTIL IT WAS SAFE
SOUNDBITE: (English) Tim Jago, Chairman of Muriwai Surf Life Saving Club:
"My team discovered the body, discovered the sharks were still there, it was a case of standing off for a while, we needed to put a bit of a plan in place."
OTHER FIRST RESPONDERS DESCRIBE HOW THEY WERE ABLE TO FEND OFF THE ATTACK AND RECOVER THE VICTIM'S BODY.
SOUNDBITE: (English) Russell Clarke, Westpac Rescue Helicopter Paramedic:
"The police managed to distract the shark while we extracted the person from the water, so with the use of the local Muriwai Surf Club and some distracting noise from the helicopter we managed to get the body into the surf boat and to shore."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Shawn Rutene, New Zealand Police Inspector:
"He has discharged his firearm towards the shark. We do not know at this stage whether or not he has hit the shark, but the shark rolled off and disappeared."
MARINE BIOLOGISTS BELIEVE IT MAY HAVE BEEN A GREAT WHITE SHARK, which are common IN NEW ZEALAND WATERS...BUT ATTACKS ARE RARE.
THE INCIDENT HAS FORCED THE BEACH TO CLOSE, WHILE HELICOPTER SEARCHES FOR THE THE SHARK THAT GOT AWAY ARE SET TO CONTINUE FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS.
