Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison will visit Manus Island to meet with local officials and speak with asylum seekers.

Mr Morrison has made private arrangements to fly to the Papua New Guinea island on Thursday where the federal government's three-month-old offshore processing centre is located.

He will meet with the governor of Manus Island, officials and ministers from the Papua New Guinea government.

"Most importantly we'll be looking at things on the ground in Manus Island, talking to those being processed at that facility as well as those delivering services and the plans for establishing a permanent facility," Mr Morrison told reporters in Melbourne on Wednesday.

Immigration minister Brendan O'Connor visited Manus Island earlier this month.
