Newcastle detectives have described the murder of a woman at a Newcastle unit block as very violent.

A neighbour called police at about 3:30am (AEDT) after hearing screaming and loud banging coming from the Brown Street unit.

On arrival police found the body of a woman in her early 30's in the lounge room.

The victim, a Chinese national had multiple stab wounds.

Police are questioning a 30-year-old man, also a Chinese national, with the help of an interpreter over the death and expect to lay charges.

Detective Inspector Graeme Parker says police do not have a motive.

"At this stage we don't we're still trying to get to the actual cause or motive that's occurred," he said.

"But I can say with some confidence it was a very violent crime scene."

Detective Parker says forensic experts are examining the scene.

"Crime scene are in place and processing the crime scene and that's anticipated to take at least another day," he said.

"We have blood spatter experts and fingerprint experts also at the scene."

Police say the male and female are known to each other but are not sure of the relationship.
