A Queensland man who allegedly tried and failed to steal a car before shooting the car owner in the leg has been arrested.

Police allege the 23-year-old tried to steal the man's car before shooting him in the leg in Pimpama, north of the Gold Coast, last week.

The 38-year-old driver was taken to hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The local man was arrested on Sunday and faces a number of charges including assault causing harm while armed, unlawful possession of a weapon and attempted robbery.
