Greens MP Adam Bandt has suggested his party may benefit from the dumping of ACT Liberal Senator Gary Humphries in yesterday's pre-selection battle.

The Territory's former Opposition Leader, Zed Seselja, has replaced him on the Liberal's ticket.

Mr Bandt says the party has replaced a moderate with a far-right candidate.

"Which I think will send shivers down the spines of a lot of people in Canberra," Mr Bandt said.

He says the move may provide an opportunity for the Greens.

Liberal front bencher Peter Dutton has told Sky News Senator Humphries has been a fine contributor.

"Gary continues to contribute well, particularly over the summer break when there were all sorts of natural tragedies going on," he said.

"He was keeping us informed about assistance for our communities so these are always difficult internal matters.

"He'll be a sad loss because preselection battles are always bruising, but that's a matter for the internal membership of the party."

But some local members of the party are planning to continue the battle with a general meeting planned next month to review the pre-selection.
