A Sydney man is accused of throwing a flat screen TV, vacuum cleaner and bicycle at police from his unit before setting it on fire.

Police were called to the Ultimo unit in central Sydney about 1.15am (AEDT) on Friday because of a disturbance.

As officers approached the unit block, a 46-year-old man allegedly pelted a TV, a toaster, stereo equipment, saucepans and other household items from the fifth floor at officers on the street.

One item hit a police car but no officers were injured.

The man then barricaded himself into the apartment with household items across the door before allegedly setting it alight.

Police said they eventually made it into the unit and dragged him from the fire.

Five officers and the 46-year-old man were treated for smoke inhalation.

The man has been charged with affray, two counts of destroying property, damaging a property by fire and resisting police.

He was refused bail and will face Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.
