For the first time a girl will be allowed to compete against the boys in the woodchopping at Sydney's Royal Easter Show.

Lucy Backhouse, from Moss Vale south of Sydney, created a stir at last year's show when the junior girls event was cancelled.

The teenager was not allowed to compete in the junior boys event.

But this year the 14-year-old will be allowed to compete in the junior category, along with two open women's events.

She says she is pleased to be allowed to compete, but also daunted.

"I'm actually feeling quite nervous, because it's a very big show and competing against them is going to be huge for me, even though I have competed against them at local shows," she said.

The teenager is also hoping to beat her 16-year-old brother Tom in the junior event.

"He's been training because he always says, 'Oh I'm going to beat you this year'," she said.

"So I hope I beat him, but I guess I should be training more. It's close competition between us; sometimes I beat him, sometimes he beats me."

The Royal Easter Show bills its event as the biggest woodchopping competition in the world.
