NSW ambulance budget cuts 'put lives at risk'

The New South Wales Opposition is warning cuts to the state's Ambulance Service could put patients at risk.

More than $4 million will be cut from the service's staffing budget this year under the State Government's labour expense cap.

Opposition spokesman Andrew McDonald says that is equivalent to 69 full-time paramedics, or major roster cuts.

"This will certainly be dangerous. The longer you wait in an emergency the greater the risk," Dr McDonald said.

"This will certainly cost lives because if you don't have an ambulance when you need one, your health is at risk.

"Paramedics are already well and truly under the hammer. They spend a hell of a lot of time in hospitals.

"They've never been under greater pressure. The last thing they can tolerate is further cuts."
