Queensland Rail is looking to introduce forced redundancies and relocations in its latest round of enterprise bargaining negotiations.

Talks are due to start within the next few months.

Transport Minister Scott Emerson says he wants to improve efficiencies so fares can be kept down.

"Most people would be surprised to learn that in some cases we had situations where in north Queensland we had 50 per cent more train crew than we needed," he said.

"At the same time we needed train crew down the south, but we couldn't under the current agreement move those train crew from the north to the south because of the current agreement."
