It's not quite the No.1 ranking Australia captain Michael Clarke is chasing, but a 2-0 win or better over India would lift his side one spot to No.2 on the Test Championship table.

Australia and No.5-ranked India have both been hurt by the retirements of batting stars such as Ricky Ponting, Mike Hussey, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman.

However Clarke is determined to push to the top of the mountain as soon as possible, with back-to-back Ashes series to follow the four-Test Border Gavaskar Trophy contest giving his side ample opportunities to prove themselves in the coming 12 months.

"To be guaranteed second position on the Test Championship table at the 1 April cut-off date, Australia needs win the series 2-0 or better," the ICC said in a statement on Thursday.

Should the Australian win 2-0 in India and England beat New Zealand 3-0 both teams will be tied on 119.

However Australia will be ranked above England when the ratings are calculated.

Clarke says while mourning the loss of some of Australia's great players he's embracing the challenges of a new era.

"I guess that was probably why I was a little bit emotional during the Australian summer when Ricky Ponting retired, when Michael Hussey retired, speaking at the Allan Border Medal," Clarke said.

"All the players I grew up with, watching and then playing with at the start of my career, that generation of player is gone.

"So that's been quite hard to see, that transition, that change.

"There would be nothing more satisfying than ...(a new era of success).

"Who knows? We might never be the team that wins 16 Test matches in a row, but we might be as well.

"The position we sit in as a team now is really exciting. We now have the opportunity to build our own legacy and try to become the number-one team in the world."
