Fruit and veg market stall owners set to revolt

The State Government's plan to re-locate the wholesale fruit and vegetable market from Footscray to Melbourne's outer-north, is facing a revolt from stall owners

Wholesalers currently pay $273 per square metre at the Footscray road market, but when a new facility in Epping opens next year, that will go up to $487.

They were meant to agree to leases today, but so far only 4 of the 108 have signed.

Stallholders representative, Fresh State president Shane Schnitzler says they will not sign until the Government agrees to meet them.

"No tenants, no market," he said.

The Major Projects Minister Denis Napthine has labelled Fresh State as "bullies".

"They are known well for their bully-boy tactics to try and screw more money out of Victorian taxpayers," he said.

He says the re-location will go ahead on schedule mid-next year.
