A low-pressure system in the Timor Sea above the Northern Territory is likely to develop into a cyclone in the next few days but it is expected to move towards Western Australia.

Weather bureau forecaster Mark Kersemakers says the low has brought long-awaited rain to the Territory but any cyclone that forms is unlikely to affect the Top End.

"This sort of monsoonal shower activity we're experiencing at the moment might ease off later in the weekend or early next week," he said.

"However, the monsoon trough is not expected to disappear altogether.

"We are still expecting it to be in our area for at least another week or two."
