Police have charged 20-year-old man over an early morning fire that destroyed a heritage building in Hobart last month.

Brett Stewart Bonnitcha appeared in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with setting fire to the Bridges Brothers Store on Bathurst Street.

The fire caused an estimated $10 million damage, destroying several businesses and the Girls Guides offices.

Bonnitcha has also been charged with burglary and stealing for offences which allegedly took place on the same morning.

He did not enter a plea and was been remanded in custody.

Police are still investigating the fire and have asked witnesses to come forward.
