A prisoner at Canberra's jail has used his court appearance to complain that it is the most boring jail he has ever spent time in.

Terrence Warwick Butt was found guilty of numerous offences including assault, theft and drink driving.

But on Wednesday at his sentencing hearing he used the opportunity to address the ACT's Chief Magistrate about having nothing to do.

In a talk lasting several minutes Butt told Magistrate Lorraine Walker that he believed there was nothing positive about the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC).

He explained that he had spent time in many different prisons around New South Wales, with plenty of higher education course options and hobbies to pursue.

But Butt said in Canberra the boredom had badly affected his and others' rehabilitation.

Magistrate Walker thanked Butt for his feedback and told him that it was always interesting to hear how the jail is going.

But Magistrate Walker said apart from complaining to the jail's director, Butt should consider starting a chess club.
