The head of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has warned the Northern Territory against becoming too reliant on the mining and resources industry.

Chamber chief executive has been in Darwin for a briefing on the Territory's business conditions.

He says says while large developments are boosting the economy, many smaller businesses are struggling.

"You do have a two-speed economy up here," he said.

"You have some very optimistic and hopeful economic activity around the Inpex development, which is fantastic for the Territory."

But he says there is also a range of businesses that need to be supported.

"If you don't have strong backbone of small and medium businesses, then you have an economy that will be rattled by external factors," he said.

"It won't have resilience, you'll lose jobs and you'll lose confidence."
