The submarine named after a north-west Tasmanian WWII hero has arrived in Devonport's Mersey River.

The HMAS Sheean will spend the next four days in Tasmania and will take part in a re-dedication ceremony over the weekend.

The submarine is named after Latrobe sailor Teddy Sheean who was killed in action when the HMAS Armidale sank in the Timor Sea in 1942.

Ordinary Seaman Sheean continued to fire on the enemy as the ship sank, leading to a long-running campaign for him to be awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross.

The Defence Honours Awards and Appeals Tribunal is expected to hand down its decision in the coming weeks.
