Pothole patrol push for better road maintenance

The RACV is hoping a social media campaign will pressure the Victorian Government to improve maintenance of the state's highways.

It has launched a pothole patrol page on Facebook, where motorists post pictures of deteriorating roadways.

The RACV's Dave Jones says roads have deteriorated significantly in the past decade and more money needs to be allocated for maintenance.

He says the South Gippsland Highway is in an awful state.

"When we talk potholes, we're not talking about five or ten centimetre holes," he said.

"We're talking about no bitumen on the road for perhaps a metre or so and very large rough areas."

He says the Facebook page enables people to share what they see.

"It's easy to get in and talk about budgets and the percentage of the network that's rough, but we thought we really need to get in and show people and allow people to share with us and everyone else just want it means."
