Some Kangaroo Island residents could be without telephone and internet services for another day after a fire damaged an exchange near Kingscote.
Telstra said about 1,000 customers on the western part of the island had either no coverage or a limited service because fire damaged the exchange at Cygnet River on Monday.
Police and emergency workers have been doing welfare checks at properties without phone services.
Mark Bolton of Telstra said local landline calls might be possible in some affected areas.
"All things going well, it may not take us too long to actually restore services, but it's probably a bit too early to put an exact time frame on it yet," he said.
Country Fire Service firefighters have been monitoring the bushfire which is now controlled on Kangaroo Island.
It burnt about 70 hectares and destroyed the telephone exchange, a shed and a utility before crews contained it about 8:00pm on Monday, after two days of extreme heat.
Lightning has been blamed for the outbreak.
