A teenager has died after falling from the balcony of a backpackers hostel during high school ball celebrations.

Preston Bridge, 16, had attended a ball with fellow students from Churchlands Senior High School in Perth when he fell from the second-storey of the Sunmoon Resort in Scarborough in the early hours of Saturday.

The former house captain had been in a coma since the fall, having suffered serious head injuries, but died late Monday at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

Police are treating the tragedy as an accident, and will prepare a report for the coroner.

Facebook was flooded with messages of mourning from Mr Preston's friends, with a memorial page already attracting over 6000 likes just hours after his death.

His sister Aimee thanked those who had offered their support.
