Gillard icy on polling questions in Wacol

Julia Gillard held her latest media event in a coldroom.

It seemed appropriate, given her icy response to questions about negative polling figures.

On a day when everyone else in federal politics was talking about a damning Nielsen poll showing coalition support increasing and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott more popular than the prime minister, Ms Gillard was having none of it.

Spending Monday morning in the coldroom at Primo Smallgoods at Wacol near Brisbane, she hammed it up for the cameras while dismissing out of hand any questions on the polls.

"I don't do commentary on opinion polls," she repeatedly reminded journalists.

Ms Gillard was happy to discuss a $1.2 million technology grant for Primo, best known for its range of meat products.

She said the grant, funded by the carbon tax, will enable the company to introduce more energy-efficient practices.

To the hundreds of Primo workers who turned out to see the prime minister, opinion polls seemed to be the furthest thing from their minds.

Staff were clambering to get their photos taken with the prime minister before they went back to the daily grind.

"I'm worried we're keeping you from all the important work that needs to happen to make sure that when everybody goes to the shop today or tomorrow, they can be buying your high-quality produce," Ms Gillard told the workers.
