Two home owners in Perth have been rescued from a fire after their dog alerted them to the blaze raging through their house, but their pet became trapped and perished in the flames.

West Australian police said the hero dog woke the occupants of the house in Marangaroo by barking about 3am (WST) on Friday, and they were rescued from the burning building by neighbours in Woolerong Walk.

The dog however, was trapped in the blaze, and died.

The fire, which the Department of Fire and Emergency Services believe was caused by an electrical fault, caused $200,000 in damage.

Five fire engines were called to extinguish the blaze, which was brought under control within 30 minutes.

The two people at the house were treated by St John's Ambulance officers, but were not seriously injured.
