LNP backbenchers push for youth mental health services

Liberal National Party (LNP) backbenchers are lobbying the State Government to address a lack of mental health supports for young people in north Queensland.

Several parents have told ABC TVs 7.30 Queensland program harrowing stories of their children's treatment and experiences.

They have put together a petition to the Government, calling for more services.

Local State MP Michael Trout says he is sympathetic to their cause.

"We just cannot afford to lose valuable people of our community at such a young age," he said.

"We really need to get to the bottom of why teenagers are disconnecting and to really put the focus on our Government and also the Cairns base and our hospital board to make sure that this addressed."

The full story on the state's mental health crisis will be broadcast on 7.30 Queensland (AEST) tonight on ABC1.
