A case of the deadly Australian Bat Lyssavirus has been confirmed in Queensland.

Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young is currently briefing the media about the case, which has reportedly left a child in a critical condition.

There is no treatment for the virus, which has previously killed two people who were bitten by flying foxes.

The virus is closely related to rabies, and was first identified in 1996.

The virus causes paralysis, delirium, convulsions and death in humans, and death is usually due to respiratory paralysis.
