Coalition looks to new dam proposals

The Federal Opposition is considering building new dams in Tasmania if it wins September's election.

The Tasmanian Liberal Senator Eric Abetz said a draft consultation paper has recommended sites for several new dams.

He said a Coalition taskforce on water policy has visited Tasmania and identified rivers that could be dammed.

"In the north-east and the north-west, they were sites and suggestions made. The water collected in the dams would be used for agriculture," he said.

Senator Abetz would not say how many dams are proposed or how much they would cost.

But he believed private investors could be interested in developing the projects.

The paper outlining 100 possible water projects around Australia has been leaked to media.

Senator Abetz said the leak was not authorised by the Coalition.
