The Queensland Government has asked the Commonwealth to increase the level of disaster assistance available in the worst flood-hit areas of the Burnett region in the state's south-east.

Category 'D' help under Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements means eligible businesses and primary producers could have access to concessional loans of up to $650,000.

Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney says the extra funding is crucial for the region's economy.

"In the Burnett valley intensive agricultural industries are the central part of the regional economy and they've been hard hit by the natural disaster," he said.

"The citrus orchids and the horticultural farms are the big employers of labour.

"Maintaining those employment levels is critical not just to the farmers and the orchardists but to every business in these country towns."
