Greens MLA Shane Rattenbury will move today to ban headphones on poker machines in the ACT.

Mr Rattenbury will introduce a bill to the Legislative Assembly to prevent the introduction of gaming machines with headphones which block out external distractions.

"These new poker machines with headphones encourage gamblers to play for longer periods of time because there's no distractions," he said.

Mr Rattenbury says Victoria and New South Wales have already banned the devices.

"We don't have any yet in the Territory but it's important that we keep ahead of the manufacturers who are seeking to bring in these devices which will simply encourage people to gamble more," he said.

He is optimistic his amendment to the Gaming Machine Act will attract bipartisan support.

"Given that NSW and Victoria have already taken similar steps, it would be very surprising if the ACT didn't," he said.
