Greenhouse scheme proves target possible: Corbell

A scheme to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the ACT has saved the equivalent of almost 4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.

The Greenhouse Gas Abatement Scheme ran from 2004 to the middle of last year, and required electricity retailers reduce or offset greenhouse gas emissions from the electricity they sold.

The scheme ended on July 1, 2012, when the Federal Government introduced a price on carbon to help cut greenhouse emissions.

Environment Minister Simon Corbell says the results of the scheme show the ACT Government's ambitious greenhouse reduction targets can be met.

"This is a significant achievement. Saving nearly 4 million tonnes over seven years is the equivalent of cutting or abating a full year's worth of all greenhouse gas emissions from our city. So that really shows that it is a significant impact," he said.

The results will be tabled in the Legislative Assembly today.
