Recent interest rate cuts have yet to work their magic on consumers, David Jones' chairman says.

Westpac Adelaide jobs may go offshore

Westpac is in the firing line over the possible offshoring of up to 90 Adelaide jobs, with one federal Labor MP saying workers "worst fears have come true".

Westpac on Tuesday told the workers, including 70 at its Lockleys mortgage processing centre, that it was reviewing their jobs with a view to moving them to India and the Philippines.

"We've started a consultation period that will run until the end of February," Westpac spokesman Paul Marriage said.

"If we do decide to go ahead there will be an impact on some jobs in Adelaide.

"Should we proceed we are committed to supporting people through the change and make it a priority to redeploy as many people as possible or retrain our staff into new roles."

Labor MP for the Adelaide seat of Hindmarsh, Steve Georganas, said workers at the Lockleys call centre had for years told him they were terrified of losing their jobs.

"Now their worst fears have been realised," Mr Georganas said in a statement.

"Banks need to wake up and realise offshoring is bad for workers, bad for customers and bad for Australia."
