Qantas, Emirates align loyalty program

Qantas Airways says its nine million frequent flyers will be able to use points to redeem flights across the Emirates network from March 31.

The changes to its frequent flyer program as part of Qantas's proposed global alliance with Dubai-headquartered Emirates were announced on Tuesday.

Under the alliance, which is awaiting a final decision from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), Qantas frequent flyer members will earn points on all flights on the Qantas-Emirates network and use points to redeem flights on Emirates services.

Qantas said its top-tier frequent flyers with platinum one, platinum or gold status will have access to Emirates's lounges across Australia, Europe, Asia, North Asia and the Middle East.

However, those frequent flyers will find their baggage limits reduced as Qantas moves from its current piece and weight system to the weight-only system used by Emirates.

The ACCC is due to hand down its final decision in March.
