Canberra Liberals to choose new leader

The Canberra Liberals will today elect a new party leader.

Zed Seselja will today resign as the party leader after announcing he will be challenging Gary Humphries for the top spot on the Liberal ACT Senate ticket.

A party meeting will be held around midday where both leader and deputy leader positions will be spilled.

Mr Seselja says he will not be anointing a successor.

"This is a party room decision and each of the eight members of party room gets a vote, they're not going to be dictated to by me," he said.

Health spokesman Jeremy Hanson has emerged as the front runner, but former leader and current deputy Brendan Smyth is also a serious contender.

Mr Seselja says either would make a good opposition leader.

"I think we'll have great leadership in the liberal party once I step down," he said.

Transport spokesman Alistair Coe is considered the most likely contender for the deputy position.
